Self Portrait
Title: "Self Portrait"
Size: 91.44 cm x 91.44 cm Medium: Acrylic Paint April 2019 Exhibition Text
Inspired by Rene Magritte's "Georgette Magritte" and "Son of Man" my self portrait expresses myself in a way of painting that I haven't tried before. By mimicking the pose and background there was a new creative look displayed.

Inspiration After having researched about Magritte's artist background I decided to chose two of his pieces because they were a style that I had never tried to replicate out of inspiration. The main artwork that inspired my piece is "Georgette Magritte" but "The Son of Man" also helped further inspire. One of the most obvious aspects that the painting "Georgette Magritte" helped influence was the balance pose of the woman in the piece. Other artistic elements that impacted the final outcome was the hue choice for the background and the use of line that creates an emphasis rather than it being just one plain form in brown color. The second inspiration painting "The Son of Man" by Magritte also influenced the sense of balance and the blending when it came to the clouds and light blue sky.

Planning
After having in mind what paintings I wanted to use as inspiration I took many pictures of myself in the same pose as the woman in "Georgette Magritte" in order to envision what I wanted to create. One thing I decided to change was that instead of holding a cigarette I would be holding a flower.
Experimentation
Before I began to paint I experimented with the hues I was going to use to paint the image. Fist I mixed the basic yellow, red, white and brown to create the skin tone and later on I tried out different combinations to make the side colors.

Process
(1 & 2)- The first step was to build the canvas to paint on. After having assembled in place the four wooden bars I stapled each corner twice. Once the frame was done it was placed over in the canvas textile, cut, folded and stapled on all the sides. To make sure that the corner folds were secured, three staples were placed in.
(3 & 4)- d
(5 & 6)- Once the canvas was complete and built I took it home, bought gesso and covered it with one first coat. After the first coat dried up I covered it with another coat and let it dry overnight. The next day I measured and drew a big grid in order to have a more precise but enlarged image to paint.
(7 & 8)- In image seven a close up of the grid is shown wit the start of the beginning sketch to paint over. Image eight is the finished sketch of the picture I took during the planning part.
(9 & 10)- After sketching the image that I took during the beginning planning I began by painting the flower because I was looking forward to mixing the light blue and light purple to create the obre look from the original flower.
(11 & 12)- I went to BLICK to buy more paint since I was missing a few colors that were very prominent in the image that I wanted to create. After having all the paints that I needed I experimented a lot with the skin tone and finally ended up using a few similar shades for the base, shadows, and highlights.
(13 & 14)- The finished face is shown above in image thirteen. Image fourteen displays the lighter brown that I painted on to the hair to add more dimension to the hair and also because I was influenced by the lines painted in "Georgette Magritte".
(15)- For the the last step I painted the final details such as the rings and the little stems for the flowers.
Critique
Compare and Contrast
Similarities:
- My piece displays balance through the same pose as the female in "Georgette Magritte" by Magritte. - Both pieces use similar vibrant hues such as orange. blue, and red. - Another quality in common is the gradation from white to light blue to a darker shade of blue. Differences: - Both Magritte's "The Son of Man" ans my self portrait utilize dark hues to attract attention to the center. - Like Magritte's "The Son of Man" my Self Portrait piece uses balance to create emphasis in the middle section of the canvas. |
Reflection
In the end after I had completed the painting for the most part I was satisfied with how it turned out. Some of the things I was happy during the creating process was when I was painting the purple flower. This specific object within the piece was the first part that I began painting and I was proud of it because of the way the details of the flower stood out. Another reason why I was very happy with hos this piece ended up looking was because of the blending.
