Project 2
Inspiration- The first inspiration artwork for my piece is Rene Magritte's "The Portrait". This painting essentially was the one that helped decide the format of painting that I wanted to make. By painting still objects the blending and detail have to stand out. Another important factor inspired by "The Portrait" is the color scheme. Through the display and incorporation of cool and skin tone hues the background was done. The second inspiration piece which is "Weeping Coconuts" by Frida Kahlo

Planning Sketches
- The first sketch shows a dinner table setting from an angle point of view. Objects on the table are placed in a different compared to the second sketch. I decided not to go with this sketch design because the influence was different compared to the inspirations.
|
- The second sketch also displays a dinner table setting but the frontal point of view angle is inspired directly from Magritte's piece. In the end I decided to go with this second sketch because I felt like the point of view was simple and clean.

Process
(1&2&3) The first step was to gesso the canvas. I put two coats in order to stiffen out the canvas and to create a smoother surface to paint on. Once the gesso was dried I painted a first dark grey layer of acrylic paint and once that one was dry I painted the half bottom of the canvas with white to create the table/tablecloth.
Critique
Compare and Contrast
Similarities:
- Both "The Portrait" and "Mesa" have a dark and light color scheme. - Like Magritte's painting, my piece demonstrates the same kind of balance. - Similarly "Mesa", displays a table setting in the same angle/ point of view. Similarities: - Both pieces utilize dark hues to create a sad atmosphere withing the image. - Like "Portrait", "Mesa" puts emphasis on objects that have a deeper meaning, - Similarly to "Weeping Coconuts" both artworks mediums are acrylic paint. |
Differences:
- Unlike the piece "Mesa" Magritte's piece "The Portrait" displays surrealist images. - Another difference between both pieces is the - There is a difference between the way the women are shown and their surroundings due to the creation time gap. Differences: - Unlike "Weeping Coconut" the piece" shows the use of cool hues instead of warm hues. - Another difference between "Weeping Coconuts" and "Mesa" is the way the painting style creates texture in the pieces. - In contrast "Mesa" has different objects shown. |
Meaning
The meaning behind the piece "Mesa" is culturally inspired and displays objects that during my childhood to even now I saw in my house and the houses of my grandmother, and aunts. These objects are not just any ordinary things, they are important because they are traditional mexican items that have a nostalgic feeling when I see them. The first thing I would say that catches the viewers attention is the vase that is in the right side of the canvas. This object brings me memories of when I was younger because I remember seeing it for the first time in my grandmothers dining table. The design on it was very beautiful and unique and I could tell it was influenced by the inspirations.
Reflection
In the end, after having finished the painting I wasn't fully satisfied with the the way it turned out because I felt like I could have done much better if I had completed the creating process in a different manner. For example, the first thing I wasn't satisfied with was the background color. The reason why I am not happy with this part was because if I had just waited a little bit more the first layer of paint would have dried and I would've bee able to add the second layer (which was a different color) without it mixing into a shade that I didn't want originally. Besides that I would say the end result of this piece was not that bad because it still displays the image I wanted to portray and it expresses the meaning through the objects that are shown on canvas.
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you were able to "identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork" - I was able to identify the cause and effect of Magritte and Kahlo because the elements that are similar are obvious. The inspiration taken from Magritte's piece is clear through the way the painting is formatted. Kahlo's piece had an influence on the color scheme and cultural connection.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? - My overall approach for this piece was to deliver the idea of how my culture is important to me and how it impacted my childhood.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? - I have learned that traditions and culture affect a person in different ways. Just like Magritte and Kahlo culture affected their art and what they express in their pieces.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? - The central theme of my research was to find the common values in culture, tradition and how they impact a person.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? - Inferences I made while reading my research is that not only does culture affect a person but it also changes how they express themselves.
