Project 1
Title: "Paletero"
Size: 45.7 cm x 61 cm Medium: Water Color and Color Pencil September 2019 Exhibition TextThe water color painting "Paletero" inspired by Robert Cottingham's "Ralph's II" and I photograph I took for my 100 Photos. The purpose of this piece is to display hard work and perseverance. At a certain point in ones life we will all learn that good things will not come to you unless you work hard for it.

Inspiration- The inspiration pieces for the water color painting "Paletero" are Robert Cottingham's "Ralph's II" and a photograph taken for the 100 Photos project during the summer. The artist Robert Cottingham is known to be one of the artists that have created Photo Realistic pieces. This art form goes hand in hand with photography because the inspirations are photos taken by the artists themselves. Specific points of the artwork by Cottingham that inspired "Paletero" were the color scheme and the format of the way the image within the canvas was placed.

Planning Sketches
- The first sketch displays a Man pushing a Paletero cart in a neighborhood on a cloudy and rainy day. The second sketch also shows a man pushing a Paletero cart but in a lonely street. For the second sketch I was planning to paint the man in color but make the background gray and white.
Process
(1) The first step was to gather all of the materials needed to create the piece. A water color sheet of paper, Pencil, Eraser, Water color paints and paint brushes were the main necessities in order to start.

Compare and Contrast
Similarities:
- Both "Woman in front of mirror" and "Unpretty" have cool toned hues - Like Steven's painting, my illustration demonstrates the same kind of balance. - Similarly "Unpretty", displays the same emphasis which is the female figure standing in front of a mirror. Similarities: - Both pieces utilize dark hues to create a sad atmosphere withing the image. - Like "Girl at Mirror", "Unpretty" shows a female figure looking at herself in a mirror with a sad disposition, - Similarly to "Girl at Mirror" both artworks mediums are illustration. |
Differences:
- Unlike the illustration "Unpretty" Steven's piece "Woman in front of Mirror" in a painting. - Another difference between both pieces is the way the mixed hues create shadows, and display light. - There is a difference between the way the women are shown and their surroundings due to the creation time gap. Differences: - Unlike "Rockwell's" piece "Girl at Mirror", "Unpretty shows the use of cool hues instead of warm hues. - Another difference between "Girl at Mirror" and "Unpretty" is the way the coloring style creates texture in the pieces. - In contrast "Unpretty" has more unrealistic human figure than Rockwell's "Girl at Mirror". |
Meaning
- The message behind the water color painting "Paletero" is Hard work and Perseverance. The reason why I chose to portray this with this piece was because recently during the summer I came to notice that there are many Elderly Hispanic men that work relentlessly in the summer sun and heat. When I see them I feel sad because I think there is a certain age where people should stop working and rest. Unfortunately this is what many undocumented residents have chosen to work as in order to provide for their family and themselves since they are not granted such helps. One thing is for sure, though they do go through a lot they still keep pushing on instead of just giving up like many of people do even though they are young. By witnessing it first hand that is what inspired the meaning of this important first piece.
Reflection
- Once the piece was completed I was satisfied with how it turned out but I wasn't completely satisfied. It was a new experience since I had never painted with water colors before so I decided to test it out on a separate piece of water color paper. The part I was most satisfied with was where I painted the shading for the folding of the fabric in the mans clothes. The part I was dissatisfied with was the face because It was difficult to paint detail when the space was so small.
