Inspiration
- The first inspiration for the piece "El AGUACATE" was René Magritte's "The Voice of Space". I chose this painting as inspiration because of the way the sphere objects are displayed. Like a traditional Loteria card the image in the center of that piece is the emphasis. The second inspiration artwork for my piece is "Tunas (Still Life with Prickly Pear Fruit)" by Frida Kahlo. Commonality in culture and display between Kahlo's painting and my piece was the symbolism used in both.

Planning Sketches
Experimentation
- The experimentation for this piece happened during the creation process. I had thought that if I were to add a monarch butterfly resting on top of the avocado, it would be another symbols within the piece that could add meaning. What I did not think about is that the wings of the butterfly are very detailed and it was very difficult to paint it with water color.

Process
(1&2) The first step was to gather all of the materials. Those materials were an illustration board, drawing pencil, water colors, and color pencils. After having all of things needed I started to sketch the avocados, the outline and the numbers.
(3&4) After the outline and the sketches were done I began to paint the inner area of the avocado with a light lime green. Afterwards I mixed the light green with a bright dark green, and with that color i painted the border of the avocado.
(5&6) The next step was to continue to painting the peel of the avocados with black and dark green. I made the dark green by mixing brown with black and the bright dark green.Once the avocados were done I painted the seed and the orange background.

Critique
Compare & Contrast
Similarities:
- Both "The Frame" and "Feliz Cumpleaños" have a lively and bright and light color scheme. - Like Kahlo's painting, my piece demonstrates the same balance since it is a portrait. - Similarly "Feliz Cumpleaños", displays the same frontal angle/ point of view. Similarities: - Both pieces display a portrait format. - Like "First Trip to the Beauty Shop", "Feliz Cumpleaños" use darker shades to create a gradient look on the leaves. - Similarly to "First Trip to the Beauty Shop" both artworks include a illustration medium. |
Differences:
- Unlike the piece "Feliz Cumpleaños" Frida's piece "The Frame" displays a colorized portrait of person. - Another difference between both pieces is the medium. Frida's artwork is an Acrylic painting while my piece is a combination of realistic illustration and water color. - There is a difference between the way the women are shown and their surroundings due to the creation time gap. Differences: - Unlike "First Trip to the Beauty Shop" the piece "Feliz Cumpleaños" shows the use of cool hues instead of warm hues. - Another difference between "First Trip to the Beauty Shop" and "Feliz Cumpleaños" is the way the painting style creates texture in the pieces. - In contrast "Feliz Cumpleaños" has different objects shown. |
Meaning
- The meaning behind this piece has to do with my cultural traditions and ethnic origin.
Reflection
- After having finished the creation process of the piece "EL AGUACATE" I was satisfied but not fully satisfied with the outcome. The first reason why I was satisfied with the piece was because while I was painting the Avocados, the light lime green and the dark bright green water color blended very well. I liked how it looked almost exactly like the real vegetable. Another reason why I liked how the final piece turned out was because the color choice that I made was good.
