Illustration: Positive
Title: "Love Myself"
Size: 30 cm x 40 cm Medium: Prisma Colored Pencils February 2019 Exhibition Text
The piece "Love Myself" is an artwork inspired by Norman Rockwell's "Girl at Mirror" and Rene Magritte's "Not to be Reproduced". Through the piece the positive outcome of the work "Unpretty" is shown. Displayed in the illustration is a young woman that is admiring herself. On the bottom right corner the same magazine from the negative piece "Unpretty" is shown in a trash bin, which means that the young woman doesn't care of societies beauty standards and that she loves herself hence the title.

Inspiration
The first inspiration for my piece was an illustration print titled "Girl at Mirror" by Norman Rockwell. Elements within the work that influenced my piece include pose, balance, space. To the right the second inspiration artwork is shown. "Not to be Reproduced" By Rene Magritte helped influence the warm hues, balance and the mirror aspect used in "Love Myself".

Planning
Experimentation
Before starting to color the final image on the illustration board I experimented with combinations of warm hues and cool hues. In the final illustration I ended up using most of the color mixes. Parts in the image that use colors from the experimental page shown to the right are the wooden seat, the closet, the all and the woman's hair.

Process
( 1, 2, 3, & 4) - The first four steps above show the materials needed in order to create the illustration. Listed in order. a pencil, eraser, an illustration board, color pencils and the color scheme of choice.
( 5, 6, & 7 ) - After in step five when sketching the planned image for the final illustration it is important that it is not drawn too dark so it can be easily erased in case of a mistake. Once the perfected image is on the board then the heavy coloring can begin. It is good to used the light colors such as white, to blend the darker ones better.
Critique
Compare and Contrast
Similarities:
- The first similarities is that both pieces use warm hues. - Both "Girl at Mirror" and "Love Yourself" incorporate a similar pose for the girl and the young woman. - Like Rockwell's "Girl at Mirror", "Love Myself'' hue combinations to create texture in piece. Similarities: - Both pieces incorporate the use of warm colors to create contrast from the reflection figure. - Like "Not to be Reproduced", "Love Myself" has the same balance which helps by creating emphasis in the human silhouette. - Both Magritte's piece and "Love Myself" have the same use of organic shape in order to create the human figures. |
Differences:
- In contrast, "Girl at Mirror" uses darker warm colors. - Unlike "Girl at Mirror" by Rockwell, "Love Myself" displays a more bright illustration due to to the different message delivered. - Another difference between Rockwell's piece and "Love Myself" is time period in which the illustration is based on. Differences: - Unlike "Love Myself", Magritte's "Not to be Reproduced" has a much more darker warm hues. - "Not to be Reproduced" uses a different value for the hues than "Love Myself". - "Not to be reproduced" is a piece that was made though Oil Paint Medium unlike "Love Myself" which is a illustration. |
Reflection
In the end of the project I was pleased with how the final illustration turned out. After I had chosen what topic i wanted to display and the first negative image was done and colored I decided to make the positive piece bright. Choosing what hues I was going to incorporate and combine was ans easy step because I had already experimented before I had started to the draw the final illustration on the second board. One of the few challenges I had to learn about and correct was that when coloring the image, adding pressure is important in order for the colors to spread evenly on the plane. Another thing that helped with that was using white to mix the colors better.
ACT Responses
Clearly explain how you you were able to "identify the cause-effect relationship between your inspiration and its effect upon your artwork" - The inspiration piece helped guide the color scheme director of the work and also the displaying aspects in the work.
What is the overall approach the author has regarding the topic of your inspiration? - My overall approach was to display the positive side of the message I was trying to deliver.
What kind of generalizations and conclusions have you discovered about people, ideas, cultures, etc. while you researched your inspiration? - I learned about the issue of societies putting certain beauty standards on women. Through propaganda there is some women (or even young girls) that become insecure to the point that they dislike their looks.
What was the central idea or theme around your inspirational research? - The central idea of the research was the issue of women being subjected to beauty standards. The beauty standards many times can be damaging to some women since not everyone looks a certain way.
What kind of inferences did you make while reading your research? - I made inferences about the issue and how it can effect women. The inspiration artwork would take part it helping display the problem.
