Summer Painting
Title: "Mi Destino"
Size: 12 in x 16 in Medium: Acrylic Paint July 2019 Exhibition TextThe piece "Mi Destino" is an acrylic painting inspired by Frida Kahlo's “Self-portrait on the Borderline between Mexico and the United States” and Salvador Dali’s “Landscape with Butterflies”. In this artwork, Ethnicity and symbolism play an important role in delivering the message of the tough journey that is taken every day by many to escape, poverty, violence and to have a better life.

InspirationThe inspiration artworks for "Mi Destino" were “Self-portrait on the Borderline between Mexico and the United States” by Frida Kahlo and “Landscape with Butterflies” by Salvador Dali. Since the meaning for the piece is about immigraion and moving to a foreign country looking for a better life/new start, the Monarch Butterfly is symbolizing a person. Kahlo's piece has the common idea of the border between the U.S and Mexico.

Experimentation
- My experimentation was unexpected because my original thought for the piece was to paint the background of the canvas completely black and then painting over the same image shown in the final piece but in white. I ended up not going with this idea because it was difficult to see certain colors in the black color.
